NPIP Pullorum Testing- ILLINOIS ONLY

The National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) is a cooperative federal-state-industry program that establishes standards for poultry breeding stock and hatchery products to ensure freedom from certain diseases, particularly those spread through the reproduction process.

Participation in NPIP certification is VOLUNTARY, however, in order to sell or transport hatching eggs, chicks, or adult birds in or out of the state legally, NPIP certification must be acquired.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Purpose:

The NPIP aims to improve poultry and poultry products by setting standards for evaluating poultry breeding stock, baby chicks, poults, and hatching eggs to ensure they are free from specific diseases.

  • Cooperative Program:

It's a collaborative effort involving federal, state, and industry stakeholders to coordinate efforts in disease prevention and control.

  • Disease Focus:

The NPIP focuses on diseases like avian influenza (fowl plague), Salmonella pullorum (pullorum disease), Salmonella gallinarum (fowl typhoid), and others.

  • Testing and Certification:

The program involves testing and certification of poultry breeding flocks, baby chicks, poults, hatching eggs, hatcheries, and dealers to ensure compliance with NPIP standards.

  • History:

The NPIP began in the 1930s with the goal of eradicating Pullorum-Typhoid Disease.

  • Becoming NPIP Certified:

To become NPIP certified, you need to ensure your flock meets the requirements for freedom from specific diseases and undergo regular testing and inspections.

  • State Involvement:

Each state has its own parameters and certification program, managed by the Official State Agent (OSA), that administers the NPIP.

  • Benefits of NPIP Certification:

NPIP certification can be important for interstate and international movement of poultry and poultry products, as well as for building consumer confidence in the safety and quality of poultry products.

  • NPIP Pullorum-Typhoid Clean:

All NPIP participants are required to have flocks that are classified as U.S. Salmonella pullorum-typhoid (P-T) Clean.

  • NPIP AI (Avian Influenza):

Some states require additional certifications like NPIP AI (Avian Influenza). In Illinois, independent testers can only test for Pullorum.

  • Contacting the State Veterinarian:

To learn more about NPIP certification in your state, you can contact your State Veterinarian.

If you are ready to become NPIP Certified or need to re-test for your annual certification, you may fill out the form on the left side of this page for more information.
Our NPIP Certified tester WILL travel to your location to test your flock. Our tester is in McHenry County, IL and a travel fee will apply.

You can elect to test your flock WITHOUT becoming NPIP. A non-NPIP member may have their birds tested for sale of hatching eggs and live poultry within the state of Illinois. The test will be good for 90 days and is usually required before an auction, show, sale, or swap meet. Having your flock tested does not automatically enroll you in the NPIP program. You will need to contact the Department of Agriculture to enroll in NPIP.

NPIP Certification in Illinois requires testing to be performed as follows:

INITIAL Certification requires ALL BIRDS over the age of 4 months old be tested. (Up to 300 birds)

Annual Retest requirements are:
Small flocks of 1-25 birds- all must be tested up to 15
Small flocks of 26-50 birds- a minimum of 20 birds must be tested
Small flocks of 51-300 birds- a minimum of 25 birds must be tested
Large flocks over 300 birds- 10% tested with a maximum of 100 birds

After testing is complete, you will receive a copy of the testing form outlining the date, reason for testing, and test results. One copy will remain with the tester and be held for 5 years.

In the event a bird tests positive for pullorum, your bird will be retested. If the second result is positive, the bird will be banded and you will be asked to separate them from the rest of the flock. Further testing will be required.
